This year’s ERS Presidential Award winner, Stefano Nava, said of receiving the honour:

“Having attended the ERS Congress since 1990, when I was a young doctor, I always admired those big figures who could achieve this prize. Now it is my turn, and on the one hand I could say that the dream of a young fellow comes true, but on the other I have the clear feeling that time passes too fast. I have served many years as an ERS officer and carried out extensive research in the field of acute and chronic respiratory failure, however, the work that I would like this prize to recognise most is what my colleagues and I have done in fighting COVID-19. I am pleased and honoured to receive the ERS Presidential Award and I dedicate it to the more than 350 Italian doctors and 50 Italian nurses who died on duty during this pandemic.”

ERS President Anita Simonds said of this year’s Presidential Award winner:

“Stefano Nava is a pioneer of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and has contributed greatly to its evidence base on topics ranging widely from basic physiology, to acute and chronic NIV, and palliative care. He has taught on just about every NIV course ERS has ever held, has been chair of the Respiratory Intensive Care Assembly, and Director of Postgraduate courses. Crucially, when the pandemic was sweeping Italy affecting him, his team and patients, Stefano took time to advise many colleagues worldwide, making a huge difference to the quality of respiratory care delivered. This was truly heroic. For these reasons, and many more, he is an exceptionally worthy recipient of the ERS Presidential Award.”

As part of the fully virtual ERS Congress 2021, videos of the winners accepting their awards with a short speech will be made available on the congress platform before the event.

Further award categories and their winners are:

  • ERS Teaching Awards: Fabio Midulla, Michael Kreuter and Niki Ubags
  • ERS Main Award in Novel Research in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (sponsored by Acceleron Pharma): Gabor Kovacs
  • Early Career Member Award: Alberto L. García-Basteiro

Grant recipients, sponsored delegates and winners of the HERMES examination and Lung Science Conference awards have also been announced.
