International Respiratory Coalition

Transforming post-pandemic care for people with respiratory diseases

Never has it been more important to prioritise respiratory health and develop or improve national or global strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic was a catalyst for the creation of this Coalition, which aims to support governments and healthcare systems in their recovery from COVID-19 by strengthening respiratory care.”

Prof. Guy Joos. Chair of the IRC Steering Committee

An introduction

Who we are

The International Respiratory Coalition (IRC) was launched by founding partners in September 2021. Alongside the European Respiratory Society, founding partners include both patient organisations and industry. Membership of this Coalition is open to organisations within the respiratory community who would like to support the aim and vision of the IRC.

Our aim and vision

The aim of the International Respiratory Coalition (IRC) is to promote lung health and improve respiratory care. Our vision is for every country to have the tools to implement a national respiratory strategy based on best practice.

A catalyst for change

Nearly 550 million people globally live with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis and many other respiratory diseases. The outbreak of COVID-19 placed increased pressure on respiratory services, whilst limiting access to routine care and essential health services. Gaps exposed by the pandemic need urgent attention. Despite its devastating effect on people’s lives, the COVID-19 catastrophe can be a catalyst for positive change in healthcare systems.

550m

Nearly 550 million people globally live with chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis.

4m

Resulting in around 4 million premature deaths each year.

The IRC is looking for individuals who can act as ‘IRC Ambassadors’ in support of this important initiative. IRC Ambassadors will champion the work/goals of the IRC, both nationally and internationally, with a view to contributing to better awareness about national IRC projects and their successful implementation, alongside encouraging support and membership moving forward. The ideal candidates will be members of the health community with a strong commitment to the IRC’s mission and the ability to represent the Coalition to policymakers, peers from medical, patient and civil society organisations, and the general public.
