Virtual Self-Assessment Course - India

This course is aimed at all respiratory professionals or trainees wishing to benchmark themselves against the European standards or sit the European examination in adult respiratory medicine. This course consists of a 1-hour online MCQ assessment followed by a 2-hour interactive online session discussing the answers with two ERS content experts.

HERMES examination in adult respiratory medicine – India

This is the third edition of the HERMES examination in adult respiratory medicine in association with the Indian Chest Society. The examination is open to Respiratory Specialists who are members of ERS and ICS societies. This multiple-choice examination is based on European syllabi in respiratory medicine published in Breathe and the examination blueprint. Each question undergoes a rigorous process of formulation and validation by European representatives who ensure that current, as well as authentic professional situations, are illustrated. There are 51 CME credits assigned to the European Diploma examination category.

In order to sit the examination, you must be able to meet the eligibility criteria for your examination category:

European Diploma

Eligibility criteria

  • Qualified specialist in adult  respiratory medicine or a current, final-year postgraduate trainee in adult respiratory medicine
  • Qualified medical practitioner with current and full medical registration (except final-year trainees)
  • Members of ERS and ICS
  • In good professional standing

Required documentation

  • National accreditation or written equivalent as a specialist in adult respiratory medicine or attestation of current position as a final-year trainee in adult respiratory medicine
  • Current certificate of full medical registration (except final-year trainees)
  • University-awarded medical degree
  • Proof of ICS membership
  • Completed curriculum vitae (download a template)
  • Recent photograph

How the examination is designed

The examination is designed using the consensus-based European syllabi in adult respiratory medicine published in Breathe.

The questions selected for the examination are mapped to the examination blueprint for adult respiratory medicine, which show all topics covered in the examination and the average percentage of questions devoted to each of these topics.

Registration steps

  1. Check your eligibility and prepare all necessary documentation for your examination category.
    Each electronic document must be in pdf, jpg, doc, or docx, and be no more than 2MB in size.
  2. Register online through your myERS profile.
    You will receive a confirmation email shortly after you have completed your online application.
  3. Your registration will be processed within 14 days and is successfully finished once you receive a confirmation of received payment.

Please note: we advise you to start the registration process well in advance of the deadline, in case we encounter any issues with your application, and to prevent longer processing time before the registration deadline.

Important information:

Candidates must be a member of both the ERS and ICS societies to register for the examination.

Candidates must register for the HERMES examination via myERS account. Upon approval of registration by ERS, candidates will be directed to ICS to make payment. All payments are made to ICS only.

Results and appeals

Approximately six to eight weeks after the examination takes place, candidates will be notified via email that the examination results have been released, and their official result letter, certificate of attendance and certificate of CME credits (if requested during registration) will be available to download from myERS.

Successful European Diploma candidates will be contacted via email to arrange the delivery of their printed certificates which will be delivered to them within four months of the examination date.

Candidates are entitled to appeal examination results within ten working days of the examination results being released. For more information on the appeals process, please refer to the Appeals Procedure.
