World Sleep Day 2019: healthy sleep, healthy aging

14 March, 2019

On 15 March, ERS will join health and patient organisations from all over the world to observe World Sleep Day. This year’s campaign puts the spotlight on “healthy sleep, healthy aging”, which is intended to highlight how emerging evidence suggests there is a connection between premature cell aging and poor sleep.

Within the respiratory field, sleep disordered breathing is very common in Europe and encompasses a range of conditions characterised by abnormal breathing during sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) in particular is a major public health problem across Europe; untreated OSAS greatly increases the risk of accidents due to sleepiness, and it is also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, abnormal glucose metabolism and depression.

To mark the day, we have gathered a range of selected e-learning materials on sleep disordered breathing for your easy access. ERS is also offering a €10 discount on all print copies of the ERS Monograph on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and the ERS Handbook of Respiratory Sleep Medicine ordered before 26 March, 2019. Visit the Bookshop to order your copies.
