
The University of Aveiro (UAveiro) is a public foundation under private law whose mission is to contribute to and develop graduate and postgraduate education and training, research and cooperation with society.
Active research within respiratory medicine, especially in non-pharmacological treatments (pulmonary rehabilitation and physical activity) is conducted at the Respiratory Research and Rehabilitation LaboratoryLab3R of the School of Health Sciences, to optimise meaningful care for people with chronic respiratory diseases.

The Lab3R is a multidisciplinary (healthcare professionals, basic and applied scientists) and well-equipped lab where top clinical respiratory research is conducted. Lab3R has permanent access to respiratory patients; delivers pulmonary rehabilitation and other home- and community-based interventions, courses/activities to different stakeholders and trains students/professionals. It is a highly dynamic lab based in the same building as the institute of biomedicine which facilitates collaborations in the respiratory field. It is recognised in a Portuguese government document as a model of best practices in pulmonary rehabilitation.
The Lab3R at UAveiro has a very strong respiratory-related network established over the last decade with the healthcare/social institutions of the region. It has led 12 funded research projects (Total €1,600,000 in the last five years) and collaborated in eight others, obtained funding for more than 20 postgraduate (16 Ph.D. and four PostDocs) students and have published consistently (>150 publications; >75% in quartil 1) in the respiratory and rehabilitation field. Several distinctions/awards for the excellence of the work developed in the respiratory field have been given from the Portuguese Pulmonology Society and Respiratory Patients’ Association.
UAveiro has an open-door policy towards companies and other entities interested in carrying out work with its researchers, teachers and students. Cooperation is also carried out through putting into practice existing scientific and technical know-how, to solve concrete problems that affect companies and other entities. These collaborations can take the form of consultancy, studies or technical-scientific services. The PCICreative Science Park’s mission is to be the strategic and operational promoter of innovation, knowledge and entrepreneurship in the Aveiro Region, contributing to strengthening competitiveness, establishment of qualified human resources, production of scientific, technological, educational and cultural research of the region.
UAveiro is a privileged partner for companies and other national and international organisations with which the University cooperates in numerous projects and for which it provides important services. During 2022, 665 national and international research and technology transfer projects have been active in UAveiro, of which 69 funded by ERASMUS+, 53 by Horizon 2020, 17 by Horizon Europe and nine by INTERREG. The UAveiro is the host institution of 11 ERC Grants and one ERA Chair, coordinates one FET Open and four TWINNING projects, among other relevant and strategic European projects.
