The National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London is one of the major departments undertaking heart and lung research worldwide with an outstanding track record of basic and clinical research. We carry out research, development and education in respiratory science with top notch academics, great facilities, effective teaching and productive collaborations. We are working towards combatting some of the most prevalent respiratory diseases, including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis and respiratory infections, by developing both better treatments, and a better understanding of these conditions.
Global fellowships (return phase only)/European fellowships – in line with current status
NHLI contains world-class groups investigating a wide range of respiratory diseases with a strong emphasis on translational research, focused on the South Kensington, Royal Brompton and St Mary’s campuses, which all have state of the art facilities in modern research laboratories.
Researchers have access to facilities such as the Facility for Imaging in Light Microscopy (FILM) which has high quality, supported imaging, Flow Cytometry Unit and Biosciences Facilities available on most sites providing modern animal housing. In addition, services are also available for genetic sequencing, microarrays, magnetic resonance imaging, electron microscopy and statistical support.
NHLI receives around £15m in new awards for respiratory research from a wide range of funders including Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, EMBO Fellowship, EU Horizon 2020 including Marie Sklodoska-Curie Fellowships, Health Protection Agency, Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust.
