Brief Overview

Ciro is specialised in treating people with chronic lung diseases such as COPD and asthma, heart failure or sleep-related breathing disorders. Each Ciro treatment plan is tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Mission and vision: Ciro contributes to fight the personal and social burden of chronic diseases. Ciro develops and implements innovative diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic solutions and delivery systems for more responsive personalised medicine.

Research infrastructure/facilities

Ciro has state-of-the-art equipment/facilities for future fellows to be used for research activities, including but not limited to exercise training room, DEXA scan, mobile oxycon, lung function (spirometry, whole-body plethysmography), cardiopulmonary exercise test and constant work rate test, biomarker assessment, and several patient-reported outcome measures. Within Ciro, we have established experience with comprehensively identifying treatable traits in patients with complex COPD, and their tailored pulmonary rehabilitation programme.

Research funding/Resources

The past lustrum, Ciro obtained research funding from European Union, industry and the Netherlands Lung Foundation for various research projects, including but not limited to fatigue, comorbidities, exacerbations, exercise training, NMES, and nutritional supplements.

Experience hosting international researchers, career development & training programmes, outreach activities

Prof. Spruit and Dr. Franssen have extended experience with hosting international research and clinical fellows from all around the world, including but not limited to ERS Fellowships.
