Shape your career at Sleep and Breathing 2025 - article image

With less than two months to go until the Sleep and Breathing Conference 2025, Matteo Siciliano (ERS Assembly 4 Early Career Representative) has shared three reasons why the conference offers early career members the perfect opportunity to shape their careers.

1. Gain key insights from experts in patient care

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) remains a critical area of study, with significant implications for public health, affecting millions of people worldwide and leading to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and impaired cognitive function. For early career members (ECMs) looking to specialise in respiratory medicine, understanding the pathophysiologic mechanism, latest research, and treatment approaches in SDB is essential for providing comprehensive patient care.

2. Showcase your research

Presenting one’s research – whether through an abstract or a poster – to an audience of experts and professionals is a valuable opportunity for personal and professional growth for ECMs. Engaging in discussions with thought leaders allows ECMs to receive feedback, refine their ideas, and gain new perspectives. Moreover, Sleep and Breathing provides a platform to showcase their work and dedication, ensuring that the effort behind their project is recognised and appreciated within the scientific community. The supportive environment of the conference encourages knowledge sharing and provides a platform for ECMs to gain recognition in their field, reinforcing their commitment to a career in sleep and respiratory medicine.

3. Discover the latest developments in sleep respiratory medicine and science

In my opinion, the hot topics for ECMs at this year’s Sleep and Breathing will be:

  • The physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying nocturnal hypoxia and the non-hypoxemic markers associated with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
  • Gender differences in SDB. Understanding these differences is essential for developing personalised treatment approaches and recognising potential disparities in disease presentation and outcomes.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness as a biomarker of disease severity and an emerging focus in treatment strategies, emphasising the need for comprehensive management to improve patients’ quality of life.

The Sleep and Breathing Conference is organised by the European Respiratory Society in partnership with the European Sleep Research Society. It will take place in Antwerp, Belgium, on 10-12 April, 2025 – as well as online. Register your place now.
