The European Respiratory Society (ERS) is pleased to present the four talented researchers who were awarded a RESPIRE4 Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship under the second call of the programme, which was launched last year. The fellows and their project titles are as follows:
- Ana Raquel Conduto Dias Maia, Succinate-Producing Probiotics as an Innovative Therapy hor Viral Respiratory Infections : a proof-of-concept study (host centre: Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, Tours, France)
- Michele Schaeffer, Effectiveness and mechanisms of menthol inhalation for the relief of dyspnoea in COPD (host centre: KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium)
- Elisa López Varela, Biomarkers to improve Risk Stratification of respiratory tract infections: Ensuring that children survive and thrive (host centre: IS Global, Barcelona, Spain)
- Amanda Oliver, Uncovering the immunometabolome in asthma (host centre: Wellcome Sanger Institute, Hinxton, UK)

Apply for a RESPIRE4 Fellowship in 2022
We are delighted that the RESPIRE Fellowship series is back for 2022; ERS is accepting applications now for the third call of the RESPIRE4 Marie Postdoctoral Research Fellowship programme until 1 May, 2022.
The Fellowship, which receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions grant agreement No 847462), offers early career researchers with a PhD or four years of full-time research experience a platform to develop their career in attractive international working conditions, and supports them in their journey to become future leaders in respiratory research.
The RESPIRE4 programme is international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary, which helps to boost scientific networks across Europe and beyond. There are two fellowship options within RESPIRE4 – both support a global transfer of knowledge:
- a two-year European option for researchers from any nationality with mobilisation to and within Europe;
- or a three-year global option for researchers who wish to complete research at a host institution outside of Europe, before returning to Europe for the second part of the Fellowship.
RESPIRE4 Fellowship recipients have the flexibility to choose and develop their own research project related to the respiratory field, and they can approach the most suitable host centre from those on offer in the RESPIRE4 Web Host Registry.
Applicants, host centres and applications with a broad range of methodological expertise are welcome across the spectrum of respiratory research from basic science, translational and clinical research to health systems and implementation research.
