The Sleep and Breathing Conference will take place in Prague, Czech Republic and online from 20–22 April 2023. Each day is packed with various educational events and opportunities to network with fellow experts in the respiratory field.

The event is a joint meeting organised by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS), with its programme designed by members of both societies to provide a wide range of topics relevant for professionals in sleep medicine.

Here, Prof. Dr Dirk Pevernagie, ESRS Vice President and Co-Chair of Sleep and Breathing 2023, talks about this year’s event, and what he is looking forward to most about the 2023 meeting.

Q: Tell us about the Sleep and Breathing Conference and its aims?

Prof. Dr Pevernagie: Sleep and Breathing is a biennial educational event providing a state-of-the-art update on recent progress in respiratory sleep medicine and other areas of somnology. It provides an integrated approach to the investigation and treatment of sleep and breathing disorders.

This is the seventh edition since the start in 2011. We’re looking forward to this year’s hybrid event, which is the largest pan-European meeting of its kind and will include an opportunity to attend either onsite or online.

Q: Who should attend Sleep and Breathing 2023?

Prof. Dr Pevernagie: This conference is aimed at healthcare professionals who specialise in sleep medicine, with an emphasis on respiratory disturbances in sleep, but also various other sleep-related disorders.

There are very few meetings which join the two topics of sleep and breathing. Both are very important topics for respiratory clinicians, residents and allied health professionals to be kept up-to-date on within this field.

Q: Why is the event so important for both the ESRS and ERS?

Prof. Dr Pevernagie: Respiratory sleep medicine covers a vast area of expertise overlapping sleep science (ESRS) and respiratory medicine (ERS).

By joining forces, both societies bring about the best available content in an optimal format, presented by key opinion leaders.

Q: What are you looking forward to about Sleep and Breathing 2023?

Prof. Dr Pevernagie: Learning the latest developments and interacting with many colleagues from different countries and with different professional backgrounds.

Of course, meeting in person is an unparalleled experience. However, by offering a hybrid format for this year’s event, ERS and the ESRS aim to also reach those who are unable to travel.

Q: Tell us more about all the exciting opportunities for onsite attendees?

Prof. Dr Pevernagie: The mix of keynote lectures, oral symposia, poster sessions and other didactic styles has proved very successful in the past. A similar format is now being applied to continue this efficacious thread of education.

Do not miss out on this educational opportunity! The speakers and topics warrant a boost for your daily practice.

Registration for the Sleep and Breathing Conference 2023 remains open, with both onsite and online spaces available. Book your place and find out more online here.
