The European Respiratory Society and the European Lung Foundation applaud the European Commission for the proposal for a Council Recommendation: “A new approach on Cancer Screening’’, released on Tuesday, 20 September, 2022.
This is a big step forward towards early detection of cancers, especially in the fight against lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in the world.
We do however express some concern over caveats in the draft proposal, which could delay or defer the introduction of cancer screening.

On 26 September, the ERS Advocacy Council and Czech Pneumological and Phthiseological Society (CPFS) will hold the event ‘Healthier Lungs, Healthier People: A Project For the EU’ to mark World Lung Day. This event will address lung cancer screening in Europe, amongst other priority areas in the field.
