The expert panellists will discuss the following topics:

  • New classes of drugs for refractory cough
  • Speech and language therapy intervention
  • Cough and IPF

Prof. Surinder Birring - profile image
Prof. Surinder Birring
Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Consultant Respiratory Physician at King's College Hospital

Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Consultant Respiratory Physician at King's College Hospital, London (specialist clinics in ILD, Cough and Sarcoidosis). Surinder leads a research team that focuses on the assessment and treatment of cough and the development of patient reported outcome measures. As a British Lung Foundation Fellow in 2001, he studied the cellular mechanisms of unexplained cough and continued his work as a Senior Fellow in Sydney in 2006. He has published over 280 papers, reviews and book chapters and is author of American, British and European Cough clinical guidelines. He chairs the Scientific Committee of the European NeuroCough registry. He has been the chief investigator of numerous multi-centre clinical trials. His team developed the widely used quality of life questionnaires, Leicester Cough Questionnaire, King's Brief Interstitial Lung Disease (KBILD), King's Sarcoidosis Questionnaires (KSQ) and recently Bronchiectasis Health Questionnaire (BHQ) and Cough Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (CHQ). Professor Birring is also co-developer of the Leicester Cough Monitor device. He was elected Fellow of the European Respiratory Society in 2023. He was invited to give the John Widdicombe lecture in 2022 at the London International Cough Symposium for his contribution to research.

Dr Jacky Smith
Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester

Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester, Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and the Director of the Manchester NIHR Clinical Research Facility. Jacky set up and runs a multi-disciplinary team translating neurophysiological mechanisms in cough and facilitating the development of novel therapies. Her research is funded by a Welcome Investigator Award, UKRI and the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. She led the development of a cough monitoring system that has been commercialised and changed the standards by which cough medicines are evaluated.

Dr Imran Satia - profile image
Dr Imran Satia
Assistant Professor in Respiratory Medicine

Faculty member at McMaster University and the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health working as an Assistant Professor in Respiratory Medicine. He consults on patients with asthma, refractory chronic cough, complex airways diseases and has a broad research interest in understanding the mechanisms and developing treatments for these troublesome conditions. Imran was awarded the E.J. Moran Campbell Early Career Award in 2021 and European Respiratory Society Mid-Career Gold Medal in Chronic Cough in 2023.

Assistant Professor in Respiratory Medicine

Professor and PhD Program Director in the School of Speech, Language, Hearing & Occupational Sciences at University of Montana in the USA, where she specializes in voice and upper airway disorders. Laurie is the director of the VOICES (Voice Outcomes and the Inquiry of Cough and Essentials in Swallowing) lab. Her research is funded by National Institutes of Health and has been presented at numerous national and international venues including the American Cough Conference and the London International Cough Symposium.

Prof Marlies Wijsenbeek
Chair of the Erasmus MC multidisciplinary Centre

Chair of the Erasmus MC multidisciplinary Centre of Interstitial Lung Diseases and Sarcoidosis (ILDS); a national expert centre and member of the European Reference Network based at the Erasmus University Medical Centre, Netherlands. Research interests include patient-centred outcome measures in ILDS, e-health, and new therapies in pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis. Marlies is the former chair and current secretary of the ERS Group 12.01 and associate editor of the European Respiratory Journal.
