The Cystic Fibrosis Center cares for 320 Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients. The research is focused on the chronic lung infection and our results are recommended for diagnosis and treatment of CF patients world-wide. We have been active in CF research since 1970.
There is a large research group working on biofilm infection notably in CF patients. Our major contribution is diagnosis, pathogenesis, prophylaxis and treatment of chronic infections in CF patients including mycobacteria.

The research group on Dpt. Clinical Microbiology and Institute of Immunology and Microbiology (Costerton Biofilm Center) comprises six professors, all in tenure positions (three of which are MDs), postdocs, PhD students and Master Students and three technicians (tenure positions).
We initiated and supervised the work of young scientists in this area where we have developed diagnostic ELISA tests for early diagnosis of infected – subclinical or clinical – CF patients. We have shown that M. abscessus is a biofilm growing bacteria in CF and that the antibody response comes before sputum becomes culture positive – like in subclinical M. tuberculosis patients.
We do in vitro experiments, animal experiments and clinical studies and have all the necessary equipment, expertise and skills, and funds necessary for immunology and bacteriology and clinical research.
Through funding partners we have obtained a leading position within the research fields of immunology, virology, parasitology and microbiology.
In addition to this, ISIMs large network of affiliations, collaborations and various other agreements helps to ensure ISIMs scientific lead in the above mentioned areas on an international scale.
We have continuously since 1981 hosted international research colleagues on sabbaticals, on PhD work, on long-term collaboration etc. from USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Check Republic, Spain, Italy, Polen, Rumania, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Iran, China, Japan. We are a ESCMID Collaborating Center which has hosted numerous visiting young scientists for shorter periods (1-2 weeks).
