The Centre for Environment and Health (E&H) includes the following closely linked areas of research: (a) Occupational and Environmental Exposure and Toxicological Assessment; (b) Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
The Centre for Environment and Health performs translational research regarding mechanisms of toxicity of inhaled pollutants with an emphasis on: 1) ultrafine particles and engineered nanoparticles; 2) immunological and non-immunological mechanisms of chemical-induced asthma.
The Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases and Thoracic Surgery (BREATHE): Lung and chest wall mechanics: respiratory function in health and disease and effects of drugs. – Lung toxicology: fundamental mechanisms and epidemiologic research on occupational hazards. – Biochemical and metabolic functions of lung in health and disease and animal models. – Bronchial carcinoma: PET-scan, therapeutic modalities. – Respiratory muscles: animal models and changes in disease. – Difficult asthma. – Pulmonary embolism and hypertension. – COPD and rehabilitation.
