ERS International Short-Term Fellowship

Funded by ERS, these fellowships are for projects outside of Europe/overseas. There are two fellowships on offer, based on scientific merit.

Four Short-Term Fellowships per year (two per round) are on offer jointly funded by the ERS and EMBO ("European Molecular Biology Organization" -embo.

ERS Fellowship in memory of Dr Valia Kechagia

Dr Valia Kechagia was a speciality doctor in adult cystic fibrosis. She qualified from Athens Medical University in 1998, and worked for different aspects of the respiratory department at a prestigious UK hospital from 2004. Her contribution to adult cystic fibrosis included an extensive research into the mechanism underlying exacerbations of asthma associated with viral infections. Dr Valia Kechagia died in summer 2014. This fellowship has been initiated by her colleagues and family in her memory.

ERS PAH fellowships aim to support projects in clinical research, translational research and basic science in the broad field of pulmonary circulation (immunology, cardiology, vascular diseases, etc.).

Funded by ERS, these fellowships are for projects in Europe. The number of fellowships on offer vary depending on the scientific merit and budget availability.

Walther Guerrero Ciquero TB Fellowship

The ERS offers one Short-Term Fellowship per year to support the training and education of research techniques of young doctors in the field of TB. This Fellowship honours the memory of Dr. Walther Guerrero Ciquero who died 15 April 2010 while on duty in Djibouti for Médecins Sans Frontières. He used his experience and knowledge of TB to benefit patients in MSF projects in Kenya, Abkhazia, Aremenia and Georgia. The ERS President’s Award 2010 was presented posthumously to Dr. Walther Guerrero Ciquero, movingly described by ERS Past-President, Prof. Siafakas, as “in every way, the perfect example of the altruistic doctor of today with the highest humanistic values.

ERS Short-Term Fellowship for Scientifically Developing Countries

Funded by ERS, these fellowships are an opportunity for scientists, physicians, researchers from low income countries listed by the World Bank to do a project in Europe. This programme is also opened to residents from a county in Europe with scientific/medical gaps in respiratory science/medicine to apply for a project in Europe. There are two fellowships on offer, based on scientific merit.
