The European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP) has awarded its 2024 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Tobacco Control to Dr Filippos Filippidis, European Respiratory Society (ERS) Tobacco Control Committee Chair.

The award recognises Filippos’ commitment towards increasing awareness among policymakers and the public of the evidence linking tobacco-product use with respiratory disease.

Speaking about the award, Filippos said, “I am very honoured to receive this award, which also reflects the key contributions of ERS to tobacco control.”

Filippos received the award in the same week as the UK government announced a plan to ban the sale of disposable vapes in England and Wales. Filippos said this about the ban:

“The popularity of e-cigarettes among youth has been a major public health concern for some time and it has only become worse with the emergence of disposable vapes. Banning them will not only protect young people from the risk of nicotine addiction but will also address the huge environmental impact of these products.”

Tobacco consumption remains one of the leading causes of preventable illness and premature death in the EU. Learn more about ERS advocacy activities related to tobacco control.
