The European Respiratory Society (ERS) has announced the theme of its 2025 Congress as ‘Respiratory health around the globe’.

Each year, the ERS Congress provides an opportunity to highlight an overarching theme relevant to many aspects within the event’s extensive programme, which consistently covers the full breadth of respiratory topics. In 2025, the selected theme reflects the fact that the ERS Congress is a platform which encourages collaboration and discussion among the world’s respiratory professionals – for the benefit of lung health worldwide.

A number of sessions and activities will take place under the umbrella of this year’s theme, which focuses on three key areas:

  • Global burden of disease from infancy to the elderly
  • Challenges in respiratory health worldwide, differences and similarities
  • Global solutions to improve respiratory health

Assoc. Prof. Marielle Pijnenburg and Dr Lieuwe Bos, Co-Chairs of the ERS Congress 2025, explained the reason why this particular theme was selected:

“This year’s theme is brought into focus by ERS’s recently updated strategy, a priority area of which is global collaboration,” said Assoc. Prof. Pijnenburg.

“While the majority of ERS members are based in Europe, around a third of the Society’s membership is from outside Europe – which helps to broaden the knowledge and expertise available to the Society.

“Therefore, there is no better platform than the ERS Congress – the world’s largest respiratory meeting – for scientists, clinicians and allied health professionals from all specialties and regions of the world to meet and share their knowledge.

“ERS is committed to playing a key role in reducing the global burden of respiratory disease – this year’s theme offers a great opportunity to support this.”

Dr Bos added:

“I am really looking forward to the sessions and activities which will take place under the umbrella of this year’s theme.

“The theme gives us a great opportunity to discuss challenges in respiratory medicine and their solutions, for the benefit of all regions of the world, across all lifespans and within all disease areas.”

In addition to activities planned at the Congress itself, a number of initiatives will also take place before this year’s event in Amsterdam (27 September to 1 October).

These activities will kick-off with a pre-Congress ERS Vision Live event entitled ‘Respiratory health around the globe: common problems and shared solutions’ – hosted on the ERS Respiratory Channel on 26 May (18:00–19:00 CEST). Learn more about this event and register for free.

In addition, a special ‘global reach’ educational webinar series linked to the congress theme will take place – focused on exploring challenges to respiratory health and sharing solutions with colleagues from around the world.

  • Differences in ILD phenotypes around the world
  • Global perspectives on long-COVID
  • The worldwide obesity epidemic and its impact on respiratory health
  • Smoking, vaping and their impact on young peoples’ lungs
  • Global application of the lung cancer screening programme
  • Tuberculosis across continents

A number of sessions in this webinar series will be co-hosted by ERS and national respiratory society partners from around the world.
