The European Respiratory Society (ERS) in collaboration with the European Sleep and Research Society (ESRS) welcomed almost 1,000 delegates to Sleep and Breathing 2021, which took place online from 16–17 April. This year’s event offered more than 40 virtual scientific sessions and educational workshops to clinicians, scientists and allied health professionals specialising in the respiratory sleep medicine field.

Professor Marisa Bonsignore, Co-Chair of the conference, commented: “This year’s Sleep and Breathing event successfully built upon past conferences and delivered a high-quality virtual programme combining expert presentations from the ERS and the European Sleep and Research Society. With a focus on current hot topics in the field, Sleep and Breathing is always a unique and invaluable opportunity for interested respiratory professionals to stay updated on major topics relating to sleep.”

The wide variety of presentations over the two-day event included symposia, pro and con debate and case-based sessions among others, and covered hot topics including NIV, COPD, sleepiness and neurocognitive problems.

Fellow Co-Chair Professor Walter McNicholas added: “In the face of the global health crisis, it is more important than ever to find ways to connect with colleagues and share knowledge. This year’s virtual event enabled us to hear from internationally acclaimed speakers on a comprehensive range of subjects, including how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our practice. We thank those who attended and look forward to seeing you all again at the next conference in 2023.”

Sleep and Breathing 2023 will take place in Prague from 20-22 April. More details will be announced in 2022.
