The European Commission has released work programmes for its EU4Health and Horizon Europe initiatives, setting out plans to fund a range of projects in health in the coming years. Both programmes offer great opportunities for the respiratory community.

EU4Health is the EU’s response to COVID-19, which has had a major impact on medical and healthcare staff, patients and health systems in Europe. In the first year of its seven-year financial framework, EU4Health will invest €312 million for crisis preparedness, disease prevention, health systems and the healthcare workforce, and digitalisation.

Funded projects will cover disease surveillance, preventing shortages of medicines, prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, stronger European Reference Networks for rare diseases, testing the resilience of health systems, and preparing a European Health Data Space, among others. Funding will be open for applications in the coming weeks.

Horizon Europe is calling for proposals relating to six key areas for its 2021–2022 programme, which are: staying healthy in a rapidly changing society; living and working in a health-promoting environment; tackling diseases and reducing disease burden; ensuring access to innovative, sustainable and high-quality health care; unlocking the full potential of new tools, technologies and digital solutions for a healthy society; and maintaining an innovative, sustainable and globally competitive health-related industry.

An information day designed to inform participants about the topics included Horizon Europe’s Health programme will take place on 2 July, 2021, and is open for participation without prior registration. The European action Bridge2HE together with the European Commission and Enterprise Europe Network is also organising the Horizon Europe Brokerage Event, taking place on 5 July, 2021, to aid applicants in building their consortium for the upcoming calls. The programme is accepting its first proposals, which can be submitted through the Commission’s Funding and Tenders Portal, with the first deadlines in September.
