ERS President Marc Humbert said of this year’s Presidential Awardee, Gérald Simonneau:

Gérald Simonneau is Emeritus Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the Université Paris-Saclay, France. He has markedly influenced modern pulmonary vascular medicine, establishing evidence-based developments on key topics ranging from basic physiology of the pulmonary circulation, to evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension. His work has led to major discoveries and development of novel strategies for the management of acute and chronic pulmonary vascular diseases. Gérald Simonneau has been a founding member of the ESC-ERS pulmonary hypertension guidelines and he is one of the chairs of the World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension. Gérald has always been very open and generous, promoting future leaders in his field of excellence all over the world. For these reasons, and many more, he is an exceptionally worthy recipient of the ERS Presidential Award.”

Congress Chairs Anita Simmonds and Thierry Troosters, said of this year’s Congress Chair Awardee Hans Henri P. Kluge:

“Dr Hans Kluge has headed the World Health Organization, European regional office since February 2020. At its first in-person international meeting since the Corona Pandemic, the Congress chairs wanted to emphasize the crucially  important role that WHO and its regional office has played in reacting to the pandemic by informing the general public, national authorities and health care providers on infection control, vaccination, treatment of COVID-19, and managing the needs of patients suffering from long term consequences in need of rehabilitation. The role of WHO-Europe to maintain respiratory health and health in general, in close collaboration with the Learned Societies, cannot be underestimated, especially in times of crisis. With a background working with Medicine San Frontieres, and subsequently specializing in TB control, and organising medicine and public health in conflict zones, Dr Kluge has been the ideal person to lead these initiatives and move forward with advocates to restore physical and mental health care in Ukraine within a complex political landscape. His achievements on these multiple, exceptionally challenging fronts is truly impressive.

ERS has worked with WHO(-Europe) on several projects to improve respiratory health. These projects include smoking cessation, TB-programs and the development of air quality standards. The Society collaborated with WHO-Europe to share information throughout the Corona-pandemic. Prof Simonds and Troosters, conference chairs of the 2022 ERS congress felt it was appropriate to put the spotlight on this collaboration and the live-saving activities of WHO-Europe for respiratory health after a series of global and regional health crises.”
