On February 8, 2023 the European Respiratory Society (ERS) submitted, together with the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), a joint response to the Consultation on “European vehicle emissions standards – Euro 7 for cars, vans, lorries and buses”.

The initiative (part of the European Green Deal) aims at developing stricter emissions standards (EURO7) for all petrol and diesel cars, vans, lorries and buses.

Unfortunately, the proposal does not reach the level of ambition that is needed to create a meaningful change for a cleaner, safer, healthier environment. Although the new rules do set emission limits for previously unregulated pollutants (I.e., nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions from heavy-duty vehicles), concerns remain on several aspects of the proposal.
