Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare complication of acute pulmonary embolism, but its diagnosis is frequently delayed or even missed. This is regrettable because it is largely curable, while potentially fatal if untreated. Since the publication of the 2015 European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/ European Respiratory Society (ERS) guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of PH, considerable advances have been made in the understanding, diagnosis and management of CTEPH. These aspects have been described in the ‘ERS CTEPH statement’, developed in collaboration with the International CTEPH Association (ICA) and the European Reference Network (ERN)-lung, and just issued in the ERJ.
