Asbestos is the collective term for a group of silicate minerals. It was initially considered the silk of the mineral kingdom to be used in many industrial fields, but over time its serious health hazard potential became more and more apparent finally leading to its ban in many countries. Yet, in 2023 asbestos still imposes a significant threat to workers and citizens in Europe. Better knowledge integrating epidemiology, occupational and respiratory medicine as well as thoroughly structured approaches in the prevention, early detection and management of asbestos-related sequelae are desperately needed to finally overcome the longstanding asbestos burden.
