About ESADA
The ESADA (European Sleep Apnoea Database) clinical research collaboration (CRC) was launched by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) in 2015. ESADA is a large cohort of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) recruited from 30 academic sleep centres across Europe.
Established in 2007 under an EU COST Action, ESADA has recorded close to 50,000 patients to date via a dedicated online platform. Initially focused on cross-sectional analyses, the project now emphasises prospective studies as follow-up data have reached a level that enables meaningful evaluation. Recent support to the CRC improved the organisation of follow-up visits and enabled the launch of a specific prospective protocol aiming to analyse outcomes in over 11,000 patients from more than 20 centres.
Over the next years, ESADA will prioritise outcome studies and biomaterial collection, leveraging its extensive network to gather comprehensive data and samples from this unique, large-scale European cohort efficiently.
The ESADA network participated also in the EU Horizon 2020 grant “Sleep Revolution” performing a randomised trial in more than 1000 patients recruited from 23 sites across Europe. Altogether, the network has published more than 50 peer reviewed studies and contributes with a significant number of abstracts to the annual ERS Congress.

Specific aims
ESADA aims specifically to:
- Generate cross-sectional data on anthropometrics, sleepiness measures and comorbidity in European patients with various degree of OSA severity.
- Assess the diversity in OSA care and patient profiles across the different European regions.
- Assess the incidence of cardiometabolic disease (hypertension, stroke, ischemic heart disease, diabetes).
- Prospectively explore the cardiovascular and overall mortality in OSA and its relation to OSA severity and cardiovascular risk factors.
- Explore the effect of different OSA treatment modalities like CPAP, oral devices or surgery on hemodynamic and metabolic parameters (e.g. blood pressure, HbA1c, lipid status) as well as on cardiovascular morbidity, metabolic disorder and sleepiness.
- Assess the value of various sleep laboratory procedures in terms of diagnostic and treatment routines on outcome in sleep apnoea patients.
- Assess the safety, tolerability and compliance with long-term CPAP treatment, oral devices and surgery (safety and tolerability).
Stakeholders
The CRC ESADA is composed of the CRC Chairs, clinical leaders across European countries and regions, experts in clinical research, and early career members. The group members attend the annual meetings organised at different study sites and join also the CRC meeting during the annual ERS Congress.
