The first ERS HERMES examination in paediatric respiratory medicine took place in Amsterdam in 2011. Since then the exam has become a well-known and recognised assessment within the profession throughout Europe and worldwide. The European Diploma examination in paediatric respiratory medicine is also delivered in Asia in collaboration with the Asian Paediatric Pulmonology Society (APPS) since 2016.
The ERS HERMES exams are based on a European syllabus in paediatric respiratory medicine, published in Breathe, and the examination blueprint. New multiple-choice questions are created each year; each question undergoes a rigorous process of formulation and validation by European representatives, who ensure that current and authentic professional situations are illustrated.
The examination is accredited by the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP), and approved by the European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP) and the Paediatric Section of the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists). There are 51 CME credits assigned to the European diploma exam category (upon successful completion) and 6 CME credits assigned to the self-assessment and in-training categories respectively.
National society cooperation
The ERS HERMES examinations are currently used by various national or regional societies in Europe and Asia as the written part of the national exit examination, a fellowship prerequisite, or to obtain the European Diploma. Find out more
