On 12–14 February, 2026, the European Respiratory Society will host its fourth Respiratory Failure and Mechanical Ventilation (RFMV) Conference in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and online. With the deadline for abstract and clinical case submissions fast approaching, we caught up with Dr Lieuwe Bos (RFMV Organising Committee Member) to discuss the benefits of attending the conference, the expected learning outcomes, and the importance of submitting before the deadline.
Who would be the ideal participant at the RFMV Conference 2026 and why?
Anyone interested in the physiology and biology of respiratory failure should attend RFMV 2026. It is the only conference devoted to this topic alone. We aim to connect novel insights in acute and chronic respiratory failure for paediatric and adult patients using a multidisciplinary approach.
What should attendees expect to gain from participating in the RFMV programme?
The conference provides a unique opportunity to go into the care pathways for patients with respiratory failure, without limiting the view to the silos of intensive care, pulmonology and rehabilitation.
How can attendees benefit in terms of learning outcomes from the conference?
The conference provides opportunities to dive into the latest physiological and biological insights of respiratory failure. What I particularly enjoy is the knowledge exchange between chronic and acute respiratory failure as well as between paediatric and adult medicine.
Who should submit an abstract or clinical case for the conference and why?
If you have a study or a clinical case about respiratory failure that you are excited about, RFMV is a great place to receive good feedback on your work and find collaborators for further explorations into the topic.
Finally, what real-world impact do you hope the conference will make?
Respiratory failure is still a common problem. With RFMV, I hope we can continue to improve the care for these patients.
