The application and nomination period for the ERS elections 2026 is currently open, giving members the opportunity to become actively involved in the Society’s development.
With applications and nominations closing on 9 November, ERS Secretary General Dr Ildikó Horváth has shared her thoughts on what makes the elections so important – and how, by participating, members can help to ‘shape the future of ERS’.
Q: How important are the ERS elections – both for the Society and for the wider respiratory community?
A: ERS is a member-driven Society that embraces inclusion and equality of its members, and trusts that this leads to prosperity. The elections are very important for the Society, because by participating we, as members, can shape the Society’s future.
By electing diverse leaders, our community benefits from a wide range of perspectives and knowledge on how to address respiratory health challenges. Our elected officers define the direction of educational programmes, research initiatives, professional development opportunities, and advocacy, for the benefit of the wider respiratory community.
I fully trust that applying or nominating a peer for an official ERS position is a valuable symbol of engagement from our members. The more engaged members we have, the better service we can provide to our community and the stronger a voice we have to reach our vision.
Q: What makes the elections such a significant benefit of ERS membership?
A: Giving members the opportunity to have their say on the future of ERS is an important aspect of our membership offering. By participating in the elections, members can have a direct influence on the future direction of the Society. It gives an opportunity to express your opinion and to shape the activities and strategic directions of the Society.
By taking part, you can make your voice heard. More participation results in better representation of our opinions and interests. Every application, nomination and vote counts and can make a difference.
Q: What would you say to someone to encourage them to apply, or to nominate a colleague for an official ERS role?
A: Applying for an official position could create a great opportunity to enhance your presence in our respiratory community.
ERS is a great international network of diverse people, all committed to advancing respiratory and general health for all. If you are elected, as an ERS officer you will become part an inspiring network of experts from all over the world who share your enthusiasm and commitment. Not only this, but it is a great opportunity to make strong social connections. Great achievements are reached together and life-long friendships are formed.
