A number of Healthy Lungs for Life asthma training workshops and respiratory health events for communities in Malawi were held this month.

The events aimed to teach and refresh knowledge of the practical skills that are essential in effective respiratory healthcare, following the training workshops held alongside the Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS) Congress in April this year that ERS/ELF supported.

The objective was to hold grassroots events that can teach communities the basic tools of self-care to improve the quality of life of those affected by respiratory diseases.

The events included a free one day asthma workshop and a community event that took place in a rural village outside of Blantyre.

Organisers welcomed over 500 attendees, as visitors came from nearby villages to learn and participate in the Healthy Lungs for Life supported events. Activities in the sessions including games such as peak flow challenges and lung quizzes, while locals performed a play about life with tuberculosis to share the impact that respiratory infection has on their communities.

These events are a fantastic example of how Healthy Lungs for Life events can be held within a variety of settings to benefit local people with and without lung conditions.

Healthy Lungs for Life 2016/17 will launch at the ERS International Congress 2016 next month, with free public Healthy Lungs for Life events taking place across the different boroughs in London throughout September. Events will be held at high-profile locations, including Trafalgar Square, the Royal College of Physicians and Canary Wharf.
