The latest instalment of the ERS Interactive Education video series is now available on the ERS Respiratory Channel.
‘Early diagnosis of ILD’ aims to bridge gaps in knowledge by immersing participants in real-world clinical scenarios. Through expert-led discussions, this instalment will enhance decision-making around early interstitial lung disease (ILD) and interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA), familial risk, genetic testing, and early interventions.
Early recognition and management of ILD remain challenging, especially when differentiating ILA from early ILD. These subtle imaging findings, often incidental, require careful interpretation and clinical context to avoid missed or delayed diagnoses. Familial ILD adds complexity, as clinicians must navigate genetic risk factors, testing, and implications for family screening. Despite growing knowledge around mutations, integration into routine practice remains limited. Additionally, early risk stratification and preventive strategies are underutilised. A multidisciplinary approach is critical for complex or atypical cases, yet many specialists are not routinely involved in collaborative diagnostic pathways.
The experts – Prof. Elisabetta Renzoni, Prof. Sara Tomasetti, and Dr Raphael Borie – will lead participants through this topic to enable them to:
- Differentiate ILA from early ILD using advanced imaging and clinical assessment techniques.
- Understand the role of genetic testing in identifying patients at risk for familial ILD and guiding diagnostic and preventive strategies.
- Incorporate early intervention and preventive therapy strategies for patients with ILA or early ILD.
- Recognise the implications of familial ILD in diagnosis and management, including counselling and screening of high-risk populations.
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure comprehensive evaluation and care planning for patients with ILA, early ILD, or familial risk factors.
