The ERS summer schools in adult/paediatric respiratory medicine were held in Lisbon, Portugal on 15–18 June with the aim of providing a comprehensive update of both fields of respiratory medicine.

With a capacity of 60 and 61 respectively both courses were oversubscribed. Approximately 40% of attendees were clinicians wishing to update their knowledge generally, with the remaining participants largely taking part as a way of preparing for the upcoming HERMES examination.

The HERMES examinations in adult/paediatric respiratory medicine are being held in London in September during the ERS International Congress and will offer something for people at all stages of their career. The deadline to register for the exams is 30 June, 2016.

Professor Ernst Eber, lead faculty member for the paediatric summer school, commented: “The summer school included high-level presentations, lively discussions, and interactive workshops on selected topics. With more than 60 participants, many of them preparing for the European examination in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and taking advantage of this unique educational activity, the course was a great success.”

After the schools had taken place, all participants were asked to complete a post-school survey to provide feedback. 100% of the people who responded noted that paediatric and adult schools had helped them to prepare for their upcoming exams and that they would recommend this course to colleagues intending to sit the exams in future.
