Defend science, protect public health

Our campaign

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Lung Foundation (ELF) are campaigning to defend scientific integrity and calling for action from European leaders.

Disinformation, political pressure and funding cuts risk undermining years of progress in medical research. Without urgent action, this could have serious consequences for patients, health systems and wider society. We highlight three urgent priorities:

  • Defending independent science as the foundation for life-saving treatments, effective prevention and evidence-based policy decisions.

  • Countering disinformation that spreads rapidly online, erodes trust and puts patients and vulnerable populations at risk.

  • Strengthening international collaboration, which is essential in tackling global health crises like pandemics and climate breakdown.

Why this matters

  • Evidence saves lives. The scientific process has given us antibiotics, cancer therapies and life-saving technologies. Questioning these methods without evidence puts lives at risk.
  • Cross-border cooperation drives progress. Medical breakthroughs happen when researchers collaborate across borders. Restricting this collaboration delays the solutions we all need.
  • Disinformation harms real people. False health claims create confusion, leading to preventable illness and unnecessary deaths. Everyone deserves evidence they can trust.
  • Patients must be included. Policy design that includes those with real, lived experiences delivers better, more equitable outcomes. Evidence-based policy is not complete until it reflects the communities it serves.
  • Investment builds resilience. Independent research strengthens economies, creates jobs and prepares us for future health crises. Cutting funding now harms competitiveness and means paying a higher price later.

Our call to action

ERS and ELF are urging leaders to unite in defending science and advancing international collaboration to secure a healthier, more resilient future for all.

We call on European institutions, national governments and policymakers to work with us to:

  • Protect cross-border research and innovation
  • Uphold scientific integrity and transparency
  • Challenge disinformation
  • Guarantee sustained funding for public health and research
  • Invest in education and health literacy
  • Ensure decisions are science-based and informed by experts and lived experience
