The Department of Infectious Disease hosts investigators studying all aspects of infectious disease ranging from the fundamental science of microbial pathogens to the clinical outcomes of the infections they cause.
Our goal is to understand the role of microbes in health and disease and to describe host responses to pathogens, both natural and those induced by vaccines, at molecular, structural and systems levels.
We engage in cross-collaborative working across Imperial College, and partner with industry and government agencies, to translate our discoveries for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases and to communicate our advances to the wider public.

The Department of Infectious Disease contains world-leading multidisciplinary groups investigating a range of acute and chronic respiratory infectious diseases. There is a strong emphasis on bench-to-bedside research located at the South Kensington, Hammersmith and St Mary’s campuses which all have bespoke laboratory environments.
Researchers have access to a first-class environment for training in clinical and basic respiratory science with access to a range of facilities including microscopy, flow cytometry and biomed services for the production and analysis of mouse disease models. In addition, there are core facilities for deep sequencing with bioinformatic support for a range of ‘omics technologies.
The Department of Infectious Disease has an excellent track-record for receiving respiratory research funding from a wide range of funding bodies including Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), European Research Council, EU Horizon 2020, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the British Lung Foundation.
Imperial’s Industry Partnerships and Commercialisation (IPC) team in the Enterprise Division, have a deep understanding of science and technology and strong commercial acumen. They help academics and businesses work together to develop new insights and technologies and translate them into commercial opportunities.

The White City Incubator is based at Imperial’s new campus in White City. Early-stage businesses can take advantage of close proximity to scientists and experts in technology. The London location offers easy access to customers, investors, commercial partners and consultants.
DoID hosts considerable numbers of international researchers under schemes such as Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowships, ERS Fellowships and visiting researchers, as well as employed directly on research projects.
Extensive resources are accessible within Imperial College, including development opportunities from the Learning and Development Centre (LDC) and Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre (PFDC). The LDC offers a range of development opportunities for academic, research and support staff and can be used to develop expertise that is specific to individual’s profession and skills base. The PFDC offers a wide range of development courses, events, coaching and resources that are offered to postdocs and fellows at Imperial.
