The European Union (EU) has awarded the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network to RESPIRE-EXCEL, a project of which ERS, the European Lung Foundation (ELF) and Lungs Europe are consortium partners, for the training of asthma and COPD scientists.

RESPIRE-EXCEL is a pioneering initiative that aims to revolutionise the treatment of asthma and COPD. Traditionally, the treatment of these common chronic respiratory diseases has been based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach. To tackle this, RESPIRE-EXCEL has formed a multidisciplinary consortium of basic, clinical and computational scientists, healthcare professionals, and industry stakeholders who are working together to make the transition to precision medicine for asthma and COPD patients, by developing a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral PhD training programme.

ERS, ELF and Lungs Europe (an official partnership of ERS and ELF), are involved in RESPIRE-EXCEL as consortium partners. Though ERS and ELF work together continuously across multiple projects such as RESPIRE-EXCEL, Lungs Europe focuses specifically on EU projects and EU funding programmes related to respiratory health and disease. Together, ERS, ELF and Lungs Europe have provided professional and patient insight, with the shared aim of revolutionising patient care through the network’s main objectives:

  • Identify molecular mechanisms
  • Develop diagnostic biomarkers
  • Support new treatments

Project Coordinator, Prof. Martijn Nawijn, said “The contributions of ERS, ELF and Lungs Europe are critical for the patient-centered training program of RESPIRE-EXCEL, for securing patient involvement in the research projects of our doctoral candidates and for embedding their input in the clinical and professional respiratory community in Europe.”
