Every year on 31 May, ERS and global partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use, to promote policies to reduce tobacco use and to encourage smoking cessation.

Tobacco smoking is the main preventable cause of morbidity and mortality from lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and coronary artery disease, and it remains the most important health hazard in Europe.

Today, we have cost-effective tools to help smokers to quit, and thanks to political action, we have effective legislation that helps to reduce the prevalence of smoking, but there is still work to be done to reduce tobacco consumption in Europe, and new products like e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products present new challenges.

In honour of WNTD, today ERS and the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP) held an event at the European Parliament where experts gathered to discuss the latest scientific evidence and regulatory aspects related to new heated tobacco products. A new position statement from ERS on heated tobacco products was also presented, which warns of the harmful and highly addictive nature of these new products. Read the full statement.

To mark WNTD, you can also download the ebook of the ERS Monograph on Smoking Cessation for free. This ebook offers a comprehensive review of the different aspects of smoking and smoking cessation in the context of today's society. To get this book, please sign-in, add it to your cart on the ERS Publications website and complete the purchase process as normal. You will not be charged. Offer ends 11 June, 2018.
