With early-bird registration for the ERS Lung Science Conference (LSC) 2026 (19–22 March in Estoril, Portugal, and online) ending on 15 January, programme coordinators Prof. Francesca Polverino and Dr Bénédicte Machiels explain what makes the event such an unmissable opportunity for early-career respiratory professionals.

For the benefit of anyone attending the Lung Science Conference for the first time, please explain a little bit about the event?

Prof. Polverino: The ERS Lung Science Conference is an intimate scientific meeting that brings together top investigators and trainees in respiratory research. Its format prioritises focused sessions, extended discussion, and close interaction between speakers and attendees.

What makes the conference ideal for early-career researchers? In particular, what can we expect from the early-career members session at the 2026 event?

Dr Machiels: Because there is no parallel programming, early-career researchers are fully integrated into all discussions. The atmosphere is informal and designed to help junior scientists connect with leaders in the field. The 2026 early-career session will highlight trainee presentations and include practical guidance on career development.

How does attending the Lung Science Conference benefit your career development?

Prof. Polverino: It provides direct access to experts, fosters collaborations, and increases the visibility of your work. Many trainees leave with new ideas, mentorship contacts, and scientific opportunities that significantly advance their career trajectory.

What would your top tips be for early-career researchers due to attend the conference for the first time?

Dr Machiels: Engage actively, ask questions, introduce yourself to speakers, and take advantage of the small-group setting. A short, clear overview of your project will help.

What would you say to anyone to encourage them to attend the 24th LSC in Estoril?

Prof. Polverino: It’s one of the most interactive and scientifically rich meetings in respiratory research. An ideal place to learn, connect, and grow. Plus, Estoril is an amazing city and makes the experience even more memorable.

Dr Machiels: I would also add that the conference is held in a beautiful place; the small number of participants really fosters meaningful exchanges and collaborations. In particular, the poster sessions are exceptionally lively and interactive.
