Less than two weeks until registration closes for the ERS HERMES examinations in adult and paediatric respiratory medicine! Here, two ERS experts tell us why the examinations are held in such high regard within the profession worldwide.

The ERS HERMES examinations represent the highest standard of knowledge assessment in Europe. This year’s examinations take place online on 11 October, 2025 – with registration closing on 8 September (23:59 CEST).

The examinations benefit from international accreditation from the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP); they are also supported by respected bodies such as the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP).

But what makes the HERMES examinations so significant? We spoke to Dr Guillermo Suárez Cuartín and Dr Jayesh M Bhatt, respective Chairs of the Adult and Paediatric Examination Committees, to find out more about why they are of interest for respiratory professionals of all career stages and specialties.

A ‘benchmark of excellence’

“Whether you are a seasoned pulmonologist or completing your training, the HERMES exam provides a recognised benchmark of excellence. They affirm your knowledge and clinical competence against a European standard,” – Dr Guillermo Suárez Cuartín, Examination Committee Chair in Adult Respiratory Medicine.

“The paediatric HERMES examinations are a fantastic opportunity for anyone working in paediatric respiratory medicine, no matter where they are in their career. Taking and passing this exam is a great way for respiratory professionals to demonstrate that their knowledge aligns with European standards in respiratory medicine,” – Dr Jayesh M Bhatt, Examination Committee Chair in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine.

A commitment to learning and development

“This exam not only represents a personal achievement – it also reflects your commitment to continuous learning and high-quality patient care. It is also a way to align with a growing community of respiratory specialists dedicated to advancing our field,” – Dr Guillermo Suárez Cuartín.

“With three levels of assessment available, it’s accessible to everyone—from trainees just starting out to experienced specialists. The fact that it’s conducted online, typically around the time of the annual ERS Congress, makes it even more convenient to fit into a professional development plan. It’s not just a test, but a recognition of your dedication to excellence in paediatric respiratory care,” – Dr Jayesh M Bhatt.

Online format encourages global participation

“Its online format also ensures that candidates from around the world can apply – not just those based in Europe. I highly encourage respiratory specialists to register—whether you’re looking to benchmark your knowledge, enhance your CV, or simply take on a new professional challenge, this exam is a meaningful step forward,” – Dr Jayesh M Bhatt.

“As the demand for greater accessibility and flexibility has grown, the HERMES examination transitioned from onsite at the ERS Congress to an online format and is offered only once per year. This online delivery shift allows candidates to take the test from anywhere in the world, from the convenience of their home or office but still upholding the rigorous standards that the exam is known for,” – Dr Guillermo Suárez Cuartín.
