Last month the EU reached a provisional agreement on Horizon Europe, the forthcoming EU research programme. Horizon Europe will be launched in 2021. With a proposed budget of €94.1 billion, this proposal is set to be the most ambitious EU research programme.

The innovations introduced to the new programme are the European Innovation Council and EU-wide research and innovation missions. Continuing with the preparations for Horizon Europe, last week the European Commission opened a call for nominations to join the Mission Board of the new research mission on cancer.
The Mission Board on cancer, consisting of a 15 person panel, will set the mission goals and provide advice and scrutiny. Given that lung cancer is significantly under-researched and under-funded in the EU, receiving only 5.6% of total cancer research funding, the mission is a window of opportunity for lung cancer research.
The Mission Board is expected to meet at least four times per year, and each meeting will last about a day and a half. The Mission Board members will be expected to work a maximum of 15-20 days per year, and chairs around 25 days.
The deadline for applications is 12:00 on 11 June, 2019.
