The European Respiratory Society (ERS) recently conducted a review of its strategy and has highlighted five key areas for strategic development to ensure that ERS remains at the forefront of global respiratory medicine.
In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), the ERS leadership, including ERS President Prof. Silke Ryan and ERS Past President Prof. Monika Gappa, explain why the areas of primary prevention, global collaboration, digital transformation, strengthening partnerships with patients, and sustainability are all being prioritised, with many related activities already underway.
Acknowledging the incredible period of change since the strategy was last updated in 2018, the article announces that the usual five-year review period would be replaced with a “rolling strategy that is iterative, allowing for timely adaptions to emerging events, issues and opportunities.”
Prof. Ryan noted: “What is most important is that ERS is being effective and having real impact as we work towards our mission of promoting lung health and preventing and alleviating suffering from respiratory disease. We need to maintain the standard we are known for, enhance our capabilities and services, and always be willing to adapt or respond to global challenges and trends.”
