The first ERS HERMES European Diploma examination in adult respiratory medicine took place in Berlin in 2008. Since then the exam has become a well-known and recognised assessment within the profession throughout Europe and worldwide – becoming the standard of knowledge-assessment for respiratory specialists at European level. In Milan in 2017, the highest number of candidates registered and sat the examination. In 2018, the ERS HERMES examination in adult respiratory medicine celebrated its 10th anniversary.
The examination is based on a European syllabus in respiratory medicine, published in Breathe, and the examination blueprint. New multiple-choice questions are created each year; each question undergoes a rigorous process of formulation and validation by European representatives who ensure that current as well as authentic professional situations are illustrated.
The examination is accredited by the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP), and approved by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and by the UEMS section of Pneumology. There are 51 CME credits assigned to the European diploma exam category (upon successful completion) and 6 CME credits assigned to the self-assessment and in-training categories respectively.
National society cooperation
