Thoracic Ultrasound Training Programme Part 2

The aim of this training programme is to train qualified doctors to be able to independently perform thoracic ultrasound in order to diagnose and treat patients with lung diseases. This three-part training programme will ensure that participants have all the necessary knowledge and skills required to obtain ERS certification in thoracic ultrasound. All activities related to this training programme are linked to the Thoracic ultrasound curriculum.

Target audience and prerequisites

Pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory therapists, respiratory physicians, clinical researchers, radiologists, fellows and residents. Previous knowledge and experience of performing ultrasound is not required for this training programme.

Participants must have successfully completed Part 1 of the training programme in order to continue with Part 2.

Course information

Part 2 of the training programme provides participants with all the relevant skills to independently perform focused and diagnostic thoracic ultrasound examinations. Participants will further learn about the assessment of related structures and the basics of ultrasound-guided pleural techniques.

To obtain certification of Part 2, participants will be asked to attend a 2-day practical course in one of the host institution and upload an online portfolio afterwards. After successful completion of Part 2 participants will be able to register for Part 3 - Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that is going to take place in autumn 2020 or spring 2021.

CME credits

The completion of Part 2 of the training programme will award participants with 22 CME credits by the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP). The number of credits that you will receive corresponds to your attendance during the course and the completion of the online portfolio. Please note that you need to sign the register of attendance each day to ensure that you receive the CME credits.

Learning outcomes and competencies

Participants will develop their practical skills by performing ultrasounds on healthy volunteers and patients and by training on simulators. The practical training will be supplemented by short lectures as well as case demonstration at the bedside. At the end of the course, the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of each participant will be assessed. They will perform an ultrasound examination on a patient which typically lasts 15-30 minutes.

Following Part 2 of the training programme, participants will

  • Gain knowledge of basic ultrasound physics and principles
  • Be able to identify indications
  • Know how to plan the procedure and prepare the patient
  • Be able to perform a focused thoracic ultrasound examination
  • Be able to perform a diagnostic thoracic ultrasound examination
  • Have the basic skills to assess related structures (the lower neck, the upper abdomen, the heart)
  • Gain the basic skills to perform ultrasound-guided pleural techniques
  • Gain knowledge on reporting and documentation
