The Respiratory sleep certified training programme is designed for healthcare professionals at post-specialty or postgraduate level who wish to develop or update their expertise in respiratory sleep medicine. The programme is delivered in two parts. After successful completion of Part one, participants will have the opportunity to register for Part two of the programme.
Part two includes a three-day course combining case-based lectures with interactive discussions and practical workshops. The programme blends real-world clinical cases with hands-on training, equipping participants with both the knowledge and skills needed for effective diagnosis and management.
Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants who complete Part one after the Part two course is fully booked or has already taken place will be placed on a standby list until the next available Part two dates open.
Following the course, participants will expand their competence in respiratory sleep by completing an online portfolio with three cases. This portfolio will be peer-review by another training programme candidate.
Once the portfolios are completed and peer-reviewed, participants will present their cases and engage in roundtable discussions during an online session with ERS experts (dates to be confirmed).
Participants who successfully complete the online portfolio and participate in the online session will receive a training programme certificate.
Pre-requisites
- Participants must have completed part one of the programme and obtained certification.
- Participants must have access to a sleep laboratory or patients with sleep disorders within their institution to complete part two case portfolio.
Course format
Days 1 and 2 – Case-Based Lectures
The first two days will focus on case-based lectures led by expert faculty. Each lecture will be built around real-world patient cases, integrating theoretical knowledge with clinical application. Sessions will be kept to one hour to balance structured teaching with interactive discussions. Participants will be encouraged to engage actively, ask questions, and contribute to the dialogue, ensuring a dynamic exchange of perspectives and practical insights. The flexible format allows discussions to develop organically, creating an environment where participants can connect concepts directly to their clinical practice.
Day 3 – Practical Workshops
The final day will feature hands-on workshops designed to translate knowledge into practice. Participants will work through practical scenarios, apply diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and refine clinical decision-making skills in small group settings. These workshops will consolidate the knowledge gained during the lectures and offer an opportunity for personalised feedback and peer-to-peer learning.
Learning outcomes
- Apply foundational and advanced knowledge of sleep physiology, pathophysiology, and diagnostic techniques to interpret sleep studies across a spectrum of sleep-disordered breathing conditions.
- Evaluate and integrate guideline-based and phenotype-driven management strategies, including personalised approaches and patient-reported outcomes, into clinical decision-making.
- Critically assess the role of comorbidities (e.g., obesity, respiratory and neuromuscular disorders) and sex-specific factors in the diagnosis, risk stratification, and management of sleep-disordered breathing.
- Demonstrate practical skills in scoring sleep studies and managing PAP therapy, while exploring the impact of emerging technologies and patient perspectives on advancing sleep medicine practice.
Accreditation
Part 2 of the training programme has been accredited with 24 CME credits, which are awarded for attendance of the three-day onsite course, completion of the online portfolio and attendance to the online case-based sessions. The onsite programme has also received the Mark of Excellence from the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP).
