Medical education is generally deficient in teaching environmental and occupational determinants of human health in general, and respiratory health in particular. At the same time, the impact of those factors on respiratory health is increasingly evident and pressing, given recent episodes of environmental disasters. Continued medical education provides a venue to mitigate and ameliorate that educational deficiency.
Educational aims
The educational aim is to present a broad perspective of the increasingly incontrovertible contribution of irritants and allergens in the environment and the workplace, to the causation, aggravation, and perpetuation of asthma throughout the world.
Topics
- Impact of occupational allergens and irritants on asthma
- Chronic exposure irritant-induced asthma: what is the evidence
- From workplace irritants to disasters, climate change, and air pollution
- Mechanisms of irritant-induced asthma: an update
Target audience:
- Healthcare professionals
- Pulmonologists
- Respiratory Therapists
- Nurses
- Health educators
- Trainees
Format
This webinar will include three lectures, followed by a final round table discussion.
Learning outcomes
After following this webinar, participants should be able to:
- Describe similarities and differences between acute/subacute irritant-induced-asthma and sensitizer-induced asthma in terms of clinical and molecular characteristics, as well as short/long-term outcomes
- Appraise data supporting associations between chronic exposure to irritants and asthma, and discuss causality at population-level
- Appraise emerging data associating acute and relatively short-term exposures to inhaled toxicants with new onset and exacerbated asthma, and possibly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- Describe mechanisms of epithelial injury caused by irritants/pollutants and allergens, and the inflammatory pathways that underlie the pathophysiology of allergic and nonallergic (T2 vs. non-T2) asthma.
CME credit
An application for accreditation of this webinar has been made to the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP) for 1 CME credit per 1-hour attendance. If accredited, the CME credit will be granted upon attendance of at least 60 minutes during the live webinar only.
What is a webinar?
A webinar closely simulates a lecture-based teaching experience. The speaker can interact with the audience, just as in a classroom setting. During the webinar, you will be asked to share your opinion on issues related to the topic using interactive polls.
All participants will be able to hear the lecturer and see the slides throughout the presentation. As a participant you will be able to pose questions or discuss ideas with the other participants via the text chat facility and the speaker will respond to the questions via the microphone.
