This ERS course is designed to provide an overview of the physiological basis of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Through a mix of lectures, pre-recorded procedures with commentary and small-group case presentation and tutorials, the course covers:

  • the physiological responses to and limitations of CPET.
  • how to run an incremental exercise testing programme and to interpret CPET key variables.
  • the metabolic, ventilatory, and cardiovascular response to incremental exercise.
  • equipment and methodologies.
  • the metabolic, ventilatory, and cardiovascular limitation to exercise.
  • the pulmonary gas exchange and pulmonary vascular limitation to exercise.
  • field testing and methods for assessing physical activity.
