Research Seminar "Developmental origins of chronic lung disease"
Aims of this Seminar
Chronic lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis are the second leading cause of death in the Western World. According to recent WHO estimates, COPD alone will become the third leading cause of death by 2030. Moreover, death rates from chronic lung disease are still on the rise, while other leading causes of fatality such as heart disease, some non-pulmonary malignancies or stroke are declining (CDC report). Despite intensive research efforts, the aetiology for the majority of chronic lung diseases remains entirely elusive and therapeutic options are limited. However, even optimal treatment will not affect disease incidence as only established disease will be targeted, but genuine preventive measures - with the exception of never-smoking for some but not all cases of COPD or lung cancer - are not in sight. Thus, there is a burning clinical need not only for the development of novel effective therapies, but also of preventive strategies. In the research seminar, clinical, translational and basic research scientists will be discuss innovative pathophysiological concepts, identify key knowledge gaps and pin down areas of investigational priority
