€43 billion - the health cost of coal-fired power stations

A new report from the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) uncovers that coal-fired power stations in Europe cause 18,200 premature deaths and health problems valued at up to €43 billion each year.

The report, entitled ‘The unpaid health bill: How coal power plants make us sick’, provides the first-ever calculation of the effects of coal-fired power generation on chronic lung disease and some heart conditions.

In providing the preface to the report, ERS Secretary for European Affairs Prof Jean-Paul Sculier welcomed the report and called for strong action to be taken to improve air quality for European citizens.

ERS will continue to promote the need for cleaner air in Europe and closely following the review of air quality legislation expected later this year.
