With its long tradition of hospitality, the Costa do Estoril is home to some of Portugal's best hotels and restaurants, which are renowned for their freshly caught, beautifully prepared seafood.

Lisbon is a short flight away from most European cities and 6/8 hours from North America.
Lisbon International Airport (approximately 20 km from Estoril) has daily flights to and from the major cities in the world.
In addition to the Portuguese airline TAP, all the major international carriers fly to and from Lisbon. 

By Taxi

There are two taxi stands within the perimeter of the airport, one at arrivals, the other at departures.
If you decide to take a taxi, we suggest you ask the driver in advance about the fare.

Regular taxis (approximately €50):
The fare on the taxi meter should read €2.35(daytime pick-up) or €2.50 (night time pick-up). Outside the city limits, the fare is calculated from the number of kilometres travelled and the established price per kilometre.
Luggage carries a surcharge of €1.60.

Taxi vouchers (day and night fares):

Daytime (6.00am to 9.00pm): The fare is €44.18
Night price (9.00pm to 6.00am) : The fare is €53
Information and Taxi Vouchers are available at the Tourism Information Counter in the atrium of the Arrivals Hall.

Note: An additional 20% is charged for services on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and for night service from the hours of 21:00 to 06:00. 

By Public Transport

There is a direct train from Cais do Sodré Train Station to Estoril City. more information

To get to Cais do Sodré Train Station, take either a taxi or AEROBUS 91 (more information) running every 20 minutes from 7:00 to 23:00.

Implantable coil could benefit emphysema patients

A small, easily implantable device called the lung volume reduction coil (LVRC) may play a key role in the treatment of emphysema, according to a new study. The coil works by gathering and compressing diseased lung tissue, allowing healthy tissue to function more efficiently.

Lead researcher, Dr Gaetan Deslee, said: "Our study shows the device is effective in treating both homogeneous disease, where emphysema is distributed evenly throughout the lungs, and heterogeneous disease, where emphysema is isolated to specific areas of the lungs."

Monoclonal antibody appears effective and safe in phase IIa trial

A new approach to obstructing the runaway inflammatory response in some types of asthma has shown promise in a phase IIa clinical trial.

The results of the trial presented and also published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the combination of inhaled glucocorticosteroids (ICS) and long-acting beta agonists (LABA), which is cornerstone of asthma controller therapy, does not work sufficiently in 10–20% of asthma patients in the USA.

Metabolic biomarkers can predict mortality in the ICU

A metabolic profile of intensive care unit (ICU) patients based on biomarkers of four metabolites can be used to accurately predict mortality, according to a new study.

Lead author, Angela Rogers, said: "Levels of lactate, a metabolite from the carbohydrate pathway, are an established biomarker for ICU mortality. Using metabolomics, the scientific study of chemical processes involving metabolites [molecules that are involved or are the product of important cellular processes], we were able to identify several novel biomarkers for predicting mortality in ICU patients and create a network of these metabolites that was highly associated with mortality in two independent populations."

The International Agency for Research on Cancer have classified cigarette smoking as possibly carcinogenic to the human breast.

A recent study, published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control, has found new evidence to support this link. Researchers followed 302,865 Norwegian women between the years 1974 and 2003 using national registries.

The findings revealed that out of 7,490 cases of breast cancer in the cohort, women who had smoked had a 15% increased risk of breast cancer, compared with never smokers. Women who started smoking more than 10 years before their first baby had a 60% increased risk of breast cancer, compared with never smokers.
