ERS Research Seminars

POST GENOME RESPIRATORY EPIDEMIOLOGY

The ERS research seminar "Post Genome Respiratory Epidemiology" was organized at the initiative of the Epidemiology, Smoking and Occupation Assembly. It was supported by the International Epidemiological Association (IEA), the International Genetic Epidemiology Society (IGES) and the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM). The multidisciplinary scientific committee of this seminar included Josep Anto - Spain, Florence Demenais - France, Peter Helms - United Kingdom, Francine Kauffmann - France (chair), Scott Weiss - United States, and Matthias Wjst - Germany.

The aims of the seminar were

To make epidemiologists involved in studies on respiratory diseases aware of the research opportunities that modern genetics have to offer. To address some of the new challenges for the clinicians involved in epidemiological projects.

To explore the opportunities and challenges for respiratory epidemiologists in the post genome mapping phase including the emerging fields of genomics and proteomics and their implications for the design of future epidemiological studies.

To identify the current strengths and weaknesses of genetic epidemiology for public health research.
